TRAI Rules for Bulk SMS

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has put forward various rules to avoid unwanted calls and promotional SMS. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has classified bulk messaging into two categories – Transactional and Promotional SMS.

Transactional SMS or Messages.

• Transactional SMS communications are sent from an enterprise to its existing customers giving them information about the transaction made by them.

• SMS sent from Banking services, social networking sites, train, e commerce site and air ways fall under the category of transactional SMS.

• Educational institutions sending SMS related to the institution to registered parents or guardians, students fall under this category. They are allowed to send Transactional SMS at any time.

Promotional SMS

• Promotional Messages can only be sent or received between 0900 hrs and 2100 hrs.

• Promotional SMS come with a unique ID, which will have the operational code, area code, and the five digit code provided by the telemarketer.

• Those violating these rules will be penalized under the regulation, and the penalty may range from Rs.25,000 to Rs.250,000, and they may be blacklisted for a period of two years thereafter.
